A History of the Moravian Church Joseph Edmund Hutton 9783849164706 Books Reviews
I think anyone who enjoys denominational histories, would enjoy this book. I read it due to their influence on John Wesley's conversion. It is an interesting read and not a dull one.
This was heavy reading with quantities of historic background which in the end was unforgettable. The book is valuable insofar as the history of the Moravian church is to my mind little known and therefore this book fills a gap for readers interested in a wider spectrum of church history.
I only read one chapter of this long book—but it was very useful, and the free edition is well done.
This is an important history, worth being retold!
This is a well researched and well written history from the days of John Hus and his martyrdom to the "modern" Moravian church of the 20th c.
Hutton has a delightful way of writing - not dull at all. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to understand our history.
I happened upon the book in my , and couldn't put it down. It plows through terrible times and places with the Brethren, with whom I had the privilege of sharing a Christmas message and Love Feast. One needs to be focused on the events as they occur, an the people who are involved.
As a church history buff I have been curious about the Moravians for a number of years but never had gotten around to reading about their history. Hutton's book provided a well-written, interesting, and complete account of these fascinating people. I have come away with far more insight and knowledge and have had some misconceptions (gained from reading brief accounts in general church histories) removed. Hutton's account has given me the incentive to investigate the subsequent course of the Moravian church in the century since this book was written. The edition is well-edited, which is a distinct benefit.
The Moravians have not been given credit for the enormous impact they had on missions, much like the early Anabaptists. This has been quite puzzling to me, as there are aspects of their doctrines that are crucial to correct Christian thinking, particularly non-resistance. One cannot reconcile the words of Christ regarding loving even our enemies, with the current practices of most of those calling themselves Christians. This is not an easy walk; it was no so in Christ's time either. But God is faithful if we keep our eyes on things above, and not earthly things.
The book was a bit dry as it reflected on the more current Moravian church doings, but that is just a matter of being honest in the development of the history.
